Tick off the school camp list with these three essentials

There’s something nostalgic about school camp. Holding hands crossing a stream, rushing waterfalls, playing games, little backpacks, and the smell of sunscreen. Amidst the chaos, memories are being made, confidence growing, and life-long friendships being created.

For all kids, it’s the chance to try something new, and get out there in nature. Receiving a list for school camp can feel overwhelming if kids have grown, gear has been exhausted, or you’re starting from scratch. It doesn’t have to be daunting – investing in the essentials is a good place to start.

Here are our tips for what to bring so you – and your kids – can feel confident and prepared and be ready for what’s on the itinerary.

Quick-drying clothes

When it comes to the outdoors, some clothes are better equipped than others to keep kids dry and comfortable. Natural materials like Merino Wool are breathable, odour-resistant, moisture-wicking and help keep body temperatures regulated, while polypropylene is lightweight, breathable, and also quick drying, so kids don’t cool down too fast if they get wet.

Our KMDMerino Baselayer, Kids Sun-Stopper Top, and Ridge 100 Primaloft Kids Pullover will prepare your kids for changing temps, while the Trailhead Rain Jacket and EVRY-Day Wide Brim Hat help with changing weather conditions.

Sturdy shoes

A sturdy hiking or trail shoe is essential to take them from hiking the trail to playing games – especially if they’re exploring different terrains during camp. Stabilising soles that provide cushioning and bounce, toe and heel protection, and bonus ankle support, means growing feet can stay comfortable all day. Socks aren’t to be overlooked either – try our durable Kids’ NuYarn Ergonomic Hiking Socks for cushioning support.

A warm sleeping bag

Whether they’re staying at a lodge or going on a multi-day hike, a lightweight but warm sleeping bag is key for keeping cosy when temps plummet. A lighter sleeping bag doesn’t have to mean less warmth, however – the Kids’ Mini Globe Sleeping Bag weighs in at 1.5kg, keeping kids insulated in moderate climates (such as summer, autumn, or spring). Weather can be unpredictable, and one way they can be prepared is with a sleeping bag they can fit in their bag or carry in their backpack.
