Quick Overview

Designed to provide shelter anywhere, anytime.  Lightweight Bivy Bag, seam-sealed & water resistant, with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish and breathable Pertex® Shield+ Technology. Part of our elite XT Series (exceptional design, extensive testing, extreme performance), the Bivy Bag is an ideal portable shelter for experienced hikers, mountaineers or cycle-tourers looking for reliable protection that won’t weigh you down. Our Design Team has thought of everything: the Bivy is big enough in volume so your sleeping bag can loft fully for warmth. It’s roomy enough inside to read a book, with a 3D foot-box big enough to keep your boots out of the weather. A strategically-placed face vent can be opened from inside the bag to help prevent condensation, while the durable, waterproof floor stands up to damp, rocky conditions. There is a tie-in point for climbers through the dual zip sliders, peg out points for windy/slippery conditions, and a dual guy-line to keep the bag off your face. The opening can be fully closed, fully opened, or opened with a mesh screen for insect protection. Tested by our Best in Field gear-testers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from XT all the way! As an active Search and Rescue volunteer I'm called out when others are staying in. I need gear that can stand up to whatever mother nature throws my way. With all the gear I carry it all needs to be tough, waterproof and light. After years of trialling different tents and bivys in poor conditions the Kathmandu XT Bivy is now my go tentage and is a standard part of my gear list.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not quite right... The materials are good, and perform as one would expect. Like a lot of bivy bags, it will leak when raining at the points where it makes contact with your sleeping bag. Pegging it out helps, but if it's raining you really should be in a tent. Two points on this particular product are:- 1) The design of the vent is woeful - in 'real world' situations, it lets rain in, and collapses. The little velcro attachment is more of a toy than a useful feature. A minor niggle, but one that could be easily addressed. 2) It desperately needs a dedicated pole to keep the bag off your face. Ten minutes' fiddling with a collapsible pole from a discarded tent, a hacksaw and some epoxy will pay dividends. You can't expect to have a handy skyhook nearby - particularly above the snowline - and regardless, the bivy bag won't hold its shape if suspended to a tree/rock/devoted partner. If suspended as designed, it won't take long before your face contacts the bag. Hopefully these two issues will be addressed in future versions. If a pole was available, I'd have no hesitation in recommending this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quick an easy but... Quick easy setup. Same issue as others with lack of headroom ( a couple more tie off points could have fixed this). Photo is misleading. Condensation has been a major issue for me even with it fully open with head outside. The elastic zip cover doesn't stay in place so rain does come through the zip. Mozzie net zip is on the outside which seems odd. But leg room is awesome if you're tall and kept me warm so does the job, but so would a 5dollar tarp from the hardware store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light weight shelter I used the bivy recently for a four night solo walk. For two nights I kept the top open and felt warm and cosy. On the other two nights there was some rain and many mosquitoes so I zipped up the bag screen part of the bag and used a tent pole to keep the fabric off my face. This worked well so I am now looking for a better pole to use-would by good for Kathmandu to to provide one with the bag! There was plenty of room for my pack and boots inside the bag which was a selling point for me compared to other bivy bags. There was only a slight build up of condensation inside, my sleeping bag stayed dry unlike when I use my small tent and my bag gets really wet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not water proof Used this bivy in some light rain and woke up with water inside the bivy. This bag is not waterproof as stated by Kathmandu in a previous response to the same issue. The floor material is perfect. Light weight and waterproof. The rest of the bivy is not waterproof. Water resistant maybe for a few minutes but don't count on this bivy keeping you dry. At this price point my expectations were higher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Bikepacking light, easy to set up, quick to take down. can get condensation on the inside when the outside temperature gets toward zero degrees celsius. survived a massive cloudburst in the Snowy Mountains without letting any water in pair with lightweight bag and mat for a good sleep. practise with it before going out into the wild, as it's a different sleeping experience to a tent!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost awesome but NQR I agree with alot of the above comments. Material and build quality are excellent and are worthy of 5 stars. Size (Both packed and unpacked are respectable) but headroom and the need to tie it off your face is inconvenient and not quite right. This can't be done if caught out in a downpour. I experienced down to -2deg C, combined with a few cycling specific merino layers and the Kathmandu XT Insulated jacket I was comfortable enough. I'm sure a second version of this product, if the above details are addressed will be suitable for many huge adventures with full thumbs up.
