Responsible Wool

Wool is a fantastic renewable material. It naturally resists smelly microbes and regulates body temperature. But like any natural resource, it’s only sustainable if it’s managed in a way that looks after the animals and the land. All of our Wool is independently certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), certified by CU 862405. The RWS describes and independently certifies animal welfare and land management practices in wool production and tracks the certified material from farm to final product.

Protecting animals and the land

Kathmandu is committed to sourcing wool from sheep that are treated ethically and humanely. We only source wool from farms with a progressive approach to managing their land, and from sheep that have been treated responsibly. On farms, sheep are treated with respect to their Five Provisions and best practices are used in the management and protection of the land. The RWS Standard verifies wool fibre animal welfare and land management requirements and tracks it from farm to final product.

Banning bad practices

Humane treatment of animals is an integral part of our company philosophy, and we will continue to enforce these requirements throughout our supply chain. Mulesing is strictly prohibited.

Collaborating for bigger gains

It’s not just about looking at standards and adopting them. It’s about working to develop them for the whole industry and combining quantities so it becomes economical for the whole supply chain. This opens up opportunities for other brands to be a part of it. The purchase of RWS certified products demonstrates demand for better animal welfare practices and responsible land management in the wool supply chain
