But the building sector is also full of opportunity. Our green building program helps us reduce our operational footprint as well as enhancing staff health, well-being and productivity.
Green Star is an internationally-recognised sustainability rating system that looks at innovation, water use, energy and emissions as well as indoor environmental quality.
Kathmandu now has three buildings with a 5-star Green Star rating:
The Melbourne CBD flagship store was the first to open. It uses 100% green power and eco–friendly paints. During construction, 94% of waste was recycled and 95% of timber was re–used or FSC certified.
We worked with the Green Building Council of Australia and embarked on a pilot program to develop a Green Star rating tool that all retailers could use.
In 2016, Our Christchurch Support Office was awarded a 5 Green Star rating for sustainable excellence in building and design. The rating takes into account a building's overall environmental impact in nine key areas including energy, water and materials.
In 2017 we opened our 5-star Green Star Distribution Centre in Australia.
The building is three times the size of the previous distribution centre but uses the same amount of energy. The incoming goods platform faces east to avoid bad weather while the office area is orientated to the north to capture natural light.
Building materials are chosen for their lower life cycle impacts. Storm water is captured to supply amenities and to irrigate surrounding landscaping.
Solar panels and insulation reduce the amount of energy needed. Ventilation, natural light and noise control all help make the indoor environment more pleasant.
