Our Products with Purpose initiative allows you to make significant contributions to environmental and social causes when you purchase certain products.
In 2014, we initiated a project with LuminAID and the Australian Himalayan Foundation (AHF). A solar-powered lantern, LuminAID is also inflatable, waterproof, reusable, packs flat and provides up to 12 hours of LED light from a single charge. It was originally created as a first-aid kit essential to help victims of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake.
Kathmandu jumped at the chance to offer this product to our customers as part of our Get Light, Give Light initiative, where for every 10 LuminAID lanterns sold we donate one to a remote Himalayan family living without access to reliable electricity.
As part of our partnership with the AHF, each year we invite our Summit Club members to trek through the Himalayas while raising funds for the AHF. In 2014, we added an additional component, wherby the trekkers hand-delivered lanterns donated by Kathmandu to the remote communities visited on the trek.
“Many of the remote communities we support are several days' walk from the nearest village, and in many cases these communities do not have access to reliable power,” says Carolyn Hamer-Smith, AHF General Manager.
“For many families, the only form of light is a wood-burning fire. LuminAID will make an enormous difference in providing these families with their first reliable form of light, enabling students to do their homework in the evenings. Ultimately, this product will support the long-term development of these communities.”
Kathmandu designs and manufactures the majority of products we sell; however, we do have partnerships with a few select brands, such as Oboz footwear, where we sell their products alongside our own.
One compelling reason for partnering with Oboz is its partnership with Trees for the Future, which strongly aligns with our core values and sustainability commitment. Every time you purchase a pair of Oboz shoes, Trees for the Future plants a tree for a sustainable outcome. Trees planted become a source of crop shade, soil rehabilitation, food, windbreaks, medicine and mudslide control for communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, in addition to limiting CO2 around the globe.
We have partnered with From The Mayan People To You for over a decade. Our partnership offers customers the opportunity to purchase quality hacky sacs that are made by – and economically benefit – indigenous Guatemalan Mayans.
Hacky sacs are small, crocheted balls that you can kick, juggle and squeeze. They can reduce stress, increase coordination and are just plain fun to kick around.
Located in San Juan del Obispo (near Antigua Guatemala), From The Mayan People To You produces and exports Mayan and Guatemalan high-quality handicrafts that are made with high ethical standards. These handicrafts provide a critical source of income for indigenous Guatemalan Mayans. The fair price they receive for their work is then put into sustaining their agriculture.
