Instructions
These instructions are a basic guide to help you start using your new compass.  For advanced use, it is advisable to seek further advice and training.

Using a Kathmandu compass with a map

- Determining which direction to walk is as simple as lining the compass up along the desired direction of travel.
- Rotate the circular capsule section until the N-5 line is parallel to the N-S map grid.
- Hold the compass and turn around until the red tip of the needle is located between the north marks. The direction pointer now indicates the desired direction of travel.
- Note any landmarks (tree, hill, etc.) that lie in the direction of travel. You may then proceed to your first target without constantly referring to your compass. Repeat these steps until your destination is reached.

Using a Kathmandu compass without a map

- If you are in the field without a map, aim the compass in the desired direction and rotate the capsule until the red tip of the needle is located at the north mark. The correct bearing can now be read off the index.

Declination or magnetic variation

- Declination is the difference between true north and magnetic north, and varies from place to place. Declination must be taken into account when setting direction via a map. Most orienteering maps take declination into account by the N-S lines.

Deviation

- Magnetic objects such as power lines can deviate your compass needle. Take care to avoid using your compass near these objects where possible.
